THE BOROBIA MINE
The Borobia mine was launched at full capacity in 2017. It is an open pit mine, in which the exploitation hole is displaced as it progresses, closing the initial hole. According to the sterile balance, in the end there will be a lagoon. The advantage of this technique is that the open mining hole for the activity is the minimum necessary for extraction reducing the surface condition. It is located at the foot of the “Sierra de Tablado”, in a flat area, easily restorable, at a distance of just over 4 km from the village of Borobia in Soria (Spain).
Magnesite, a clean and necessary mineral
Currently, the mina of Borobia is operated by Magnesitas Sorianas (MAGSOR), which belongs to MAGNA.
This mine site contains magnesite, magnesium carbonate, of extraordinary quality with a high magnesium content. It is a clean mineral that does not contaminate either in its extraction or its handling.
Magnesite is a rare earth mineral. The largest reserves of magnesite are concentrated in countries such as China, North Korea and Russia. It is a strategic and non-substitutable mineral in application sectors such as agriculture and livestock, in the environment and industry.
SUSTAINABILITY
From its conception, the mine of Borobia is framed in the philosophy of commitment to sustainable development applied to mining, combining progress and respect for the environment.
The project has been developed in response to the responsible management of resources by Magnesitas Sorianas, a commitment that is always included in all its mining and industrial projects.
In this way, its management model is based on the following principles:
- Obtaining the mineral in a clean manner (measures to reduce dust and noise emissions).
- Zero pollution with respect to water.
- Minimal condition in terms of consumption and availability.
- Maximum efforts in terms of restoration.
- Consideration of mineral resources as “a good of everyone” with a marked social commitment to the community and the environment by the company.
Dynamic and guaranteed restoration
The company applies the criterion of starting the restoration of the areas simultaneously to the extraction phase. In other words, without waiting for the completion of the mining project.
Although the initial hole has not yet reached its maximum development, several plantation work has begun with special emphasis on the promotion of biodiversity. The restoration is guaranteed by deposit of a bank guarantee.
